Countdown to Muse 2021: Small Victories by Courtney Maum by Courtney Maum

When I landed in Mexico City in March of 2020, I believed that I may burst with pride. I had a whole day of press lined up at my Mexican publisher, GrupoPlaneta.

.

This years conference theme is “Small Victories.” We all know what the “huge” triumphes are (landing an agent, snagging a book offer, or getting a flashy award), but this year we aim to celebrate the equally crucial, tiny, and typically unseen triumphes of our composing lives. In anticipation of the conference, weve asked Muse 2021 providing authors to describe one small victory theyve had as an author that nobody learns about. Our next presenter in the series is Courtney Maum, author of Before and After the Book Deal

The Muse and the Market 2021 is practically here! This years conference is taking the kind of a virtual improved writing residency (occurring Wednesday, April 21st – Sunday, April 25th) with new Premium Workshops and the Manuscript Mart (occurring Wednesday, April 28th – Sunday, May 2nd)

My third book, Costalegre, takes place in a region of western Mexico that has motivated me for many years. When I found out that my book was going to come out in Mexico, I made a pledge that I would discover adequate Spanish to be able to promote the book myself en español by the time that it came out. I had about a year to prepare.

.

I was honestly so proud of the difficult work that had actually brought me to that conference table that day. This little triumph story doesnt have the happiest ending– the pandemic broke out in Mexico City just days later and my interviews were neither printed nor did they air.

I live in a really rural place, so the only knowing alternative was online. I registered in a program called TakeLessons.com with a talented teacher called Hilda Rueda, who was considerably patient as she set about teaching a 40-year-old a brand name new language

.

There was one instance where I thought whatever was unraveling– an intimidating journalist was asking me questions that seemed to have absolutely nothing to do with my book. It turned out she had her meeting room wrong and was interviewing me about someone elses book

Pero felizmente, ¡ ahora hablo un español bastante bueno!
