There was really little to show for it when I pumped. However, I decided that I was going to freeze sufficient milk that a person Saturday I might go and leave to the cafe to compose
The Muse and the Marketplace 2021 is practically here! This years conference is taking the type of a virtual improved writing residency (taking place Wednesday, April 21st – Sunday, April 25th) with new Premium Workshops and the Manuscript Mart (occurring Wednesday, April 28th – Sunday, May 2nd)
This years conference style is “Small Victories.” We all understand what the “big” triumphes are (landing a representative, snagging a book offer, or getting a flashy award), however this year we aim to celebrate the similarly crucial, tiny, and often unseen victories of our writing lives. In anticipation of the conference, weve asked Muse 2021 presenting authors to describe one small victory theyve had as a writer that nobody learns about. Our next presenter in the series is Rebecca Makkai, author of The Great Believers
Nursing was going badly..
I was supposed to pump every 2 hours..
In 2007, I had a newborn baby, a recovery C-section, and 12 weeks off from mentor. It felt vital to me to return to composing almost immediately, if just so I might prove to myself that I might keep going..
I might have (most likely must have) gone simple on myself– however I d published 3 short stories, was completing a deeply flawed first unique draft, and it seemed like the type of career that might go either way: Either I d keep composing, or provide up and get back to it in my 60s, wondering what I may have missed out on..
At one point, my hubby tried to assure me that I was a great mom and I cried at him that I understood I was a good mother; I was simply a horrible mammal. The infant would take an hour to nurse..
This took days
Whatever words I wrote that day, it was a minor triumph– one I would not acknowledge for years. I had prioritized my writing.
And not a surprise: I arrived, had 90 minutes, and could not get my head back into the story I d last touched 10 weeks earlier. I was sleep-deprived and frazzled and the entire undertaking felt outrageous.
Rebecca is on the MFA faculties of Sierra Nevada College and Northwestern University. She is the Artistic Director of StoryStudio Chicago.
