Q: When introducing a scene, how do you organically position 3 or more individuals in a scene?

When youre modifying an initial draft, you need to essentially re-imagine your story to give it depth, verisimilitude, and emotional power.

Your objective: bring the reader into the story and have them feel involved and connected to your characters and their issues.

How to Stage Your Scene

At the start of every scene, the reader requires to understand some basic things to orient them.

They require to understand:

Where the scene occurs
When the scene is taking place relative to the action of the story
Who is in the scene
Goal for perspective (POV) character
And why we need to care– the stakes. These are the stakes for the POV character, normally a main character and ties back to goal.

A trainee just recently asked me:

Q: When introducing a scene, what if there are 3 or more people in a scene, there need to be a clever way to organically put them in a scene. Particularly if they are all there at the start of the scene, right?

A: Yes!

An Example and Walkthrough on How to Stage Your Scene

To reveal you how, Ill share an example.

1. Start by getting a big picture view of the scene opening.

Heres mine:

Sally, Martin, and Joelle are at a café together.

2. State the scenes point of view character.

The scene is from Joelles viewpoint.

3. Be clear about where in the story your scene takes place.

Lets say were someplace in the middle of the story.

4. Note the elements for your story; be particular:

Where the scene happens
When the scene is occurring relative to the action of the story
Who is in the scene
Goal for point of view (POV) character
And why we need to care– the stakes.

Heres mine:

I like to do this in 2-4 sentences. Heres my draft without any story built around it.

ReminderOur objective here is to present the scene, not compose the entire scene. We just want to hook the reader and draw them in. Theyll check out on.

Where: a café in Paris (why not!); near Canal St. Martin, Café Prune
When: 10 pm, a pleasant summer night; the sun is just setting; its the next day after the previous scene
Who: Sally, Martin, and Joelle; also, a waiter, passers-by; cars, pedestrians, street musicians
Objective: Joelle wishes to make a motion picture and persuade sally and martin, a couple, to fund her
Stakes: if she doesnt get this film made, then shes back to square one, an unknown filmmaker, and has to get cash from someone else

My finished example:

The next night, just as the sun set on a warm summertime day, Joelle left the city, hoofed it the few blocks to Café Prune, and arrived simply as Sally and Martin did. She needed them to be able to talk about her pitch …
