My Dearest Mother
Thursday early morning, 6.30.
Prior to we left, we did up our little box for you for Xmas as it would have been far too late to leave it till we returned. It is coming as Companys items, and likely wont be sent off so you wont get it much too quickly. It needs to be opened as there is another box inside addressed to Mrs Gillespy that we want you to send out on when it does come. Likewise some little parcels and some coconuts (not packages but entire nuts) for Fairbank. Neither Amy nor Dory are to peep inside the parcels however if the latter takes them they need to be loaded extremely thoroughly below their things. Nobody is to look till Xmas day or I shall be really cross. They are extremely quaint little offerings, however all home made. I am so sorry that Amys letter about the important things for the Chicks was too late, since course, I had evacuated their things already. I never ever thought about bangles which was extremely silly of me, and Im scared they wont like the things I have actually sent them almost so well. The little animals are extremely inexpensive too and I will send them some in the future.
Your new mantle does sound a good one. I was really pleased to hear you had truly got it and it was off your mind. I am so sorry though to hear you are still feeling badly and having neuralgia. You must feed yourself up and take some sort of stimulant or Coca white wine ** or something. I do hope it is not going to be a cold winter with coats so dear.
I hope you got my little letter some time in the middle of the week. I thought you want to hear we had left. Mind, you are not to worry yourself and to believe all sorts of dangers exist, due to the fact that of George being mixed up in a quarrel. I believed to start with I would not tell you anything about it but then I believed that if by any chance it leaked out through the Bois * through Lottie, you would instantly envision all sorts of things, and think it much even worse than it really is. There is in fact not much in it– locals are always bringing cases against people– and us being out of the method, they will soon soothe down and forget everything about it. And, likewise, I actually dont think we shall be a lot longer at Horekelly, the possibilities are quite versus it. Mr Norman would much rather have George nearer, either here or at Veyangoda, and earlier or later we are bound to be moved.
Just off, have actually been scrambling with the last little bit of packing and am really hot. Now we are going to have breakfast and attempt to get to the station great and early.
We are going to tea with Mr Norman this afternoon if it is fine but every day it has actually begun drizzling about 4 oclock.
It is quite great and cool. I am using my check skirt and it is not a bit too warm. We have got all our warm things for Newera Eliya as it is very cold there, very little over 60 degrees and down to nearly 40 in the evening so my flannelette blouses will be really helpful and do them a great deal of great to be used again (I have actually aired them well, also blankets).
We are going up to Newera Eliya tomorrow, beginning at 7.30 and arriving about 5. It is rather interesting to consider going on a train. The Boy and Solomon go up today with most of the luggage to get whatever prepared. We have to take all linen and knives and forks and a good many odd things and we are likewise taking various groceries that we have in stock as they will not have actually kept till we returned so there is a bargain of travel luggage. I have actually not been out much here as George has been at the workplace nearly all the time and I dont like going out by myself and had not much shopping to do either.
Tell Jack I desire a pen-wiper *** really terribly. The one I have now is only constructed out of patterns and is very hairy. George likewise wants one terribly for the office if he feels extra generous.
I have been so silly. I have loaded up my last mails letters in package the Boy has got and I cant keep in mind if there was anything unique to address.
My belly is all right now, but I have got indigestion rather badly. I think it is because I havent taken much workout recently and it will quickly start getting all right when we start heading out biking and walking at Newera Eliya. Our bikes are pertaining to Colombo by boat and may not be here in time for us to handle Thursday, so will need to be sent out on afterwards.
Lots of love and kisses to all
Your really caring daughter, Mab
** Coca red wine was certainly a stimulant, made from the leaves of the coca plant.
*** Pen-wipers were used to get rid of excess ink from the pen nib.
* Georges sibling is wed to Mr Bois.
