Natania Barron: Five Things I Learned Writing Queen of None

Twenty years after she left her house, Anna returns to Carelon at Arthurs bidding, carrying the crown of her now-dead other half, Lot of Orkney. Anna needs to when again face the satanic forces of her youth: her sister Morgen, Elaine, and Morgause; Merlin and his scheming Avillion priests; and Bedevere, the man she once loved.

When Anna Pendragon was born, Merlin prophesied: “Through all the ages, and in the hearts of guys, you will be forgotten.”

Married at twelve, and a mother quickly after, Anna– the renowned King Arthurs sibling– did not live a young life loaded with pledge, myth, and legend. She bore three strong kids and delivered the kingdom of Orkney to her brother by way of her marital relationship. She did as she was asked, undetectable and helpful for her name, her status, her dowry, and her womb.

Carelon, and all of Braetan, is changing, however, and Anna should alter together with it. New dangers, within and out, hide in the shadows, and a weird power starts to awaken in her. As she finds out to reconcile her dark gift, and struggles to keep the power to herself, she should haggle her own strength, and family, against her aspiration and thirst for revenge.

Females Are Mostly Just Plot Points in Much of Medieval Literature

The whole concept for Queen of None came from a single passage I check out throughout my undergraduate studies in Geoffrey of Monmouths History of the Kings of Britain. It just stated that Igraine and Uther had 2 kids, Arthur and Anna. But while Arthur gets all the attention, Anna vanishes in the shadow of the king and her half-sisters.

Now, Ive got to beginning this by stating, Queen of None came about soon after I graduated from my MA program, where I studied Medieval literature and Arthuriana in general. I came into that program with a Just Because Im a Woman Doesnt Mean Im a Feminist Scholar mindset and entrusted to I Am a Feminist Scholar and I Will Burn Down the Patriarchy mentality.

I suggest, I get it. Ive checked out enough Western literature to innately understand that, for the much better part of the last couple of thousand years, ladies arent exactly depicted as heroes, or truly anything other than hassle-free stumbling blocks for the genuine heroes. There are a handful of exceptions, naturally, but its far from the norm.

Granted, there werent a whole lot of alternatives in terms of adventuring for a female, but that does not imply it didnt take place. The more I found out about the expansive Middle Ages, the more I found women who were so much more than plot points: genuine women who wrote books, took a trip the world, had visions, and narrated history.

I Can Write Books and Be a Mom

I required to start writing books, not simply … book-shaped things that could not be published. I wanted to be able to tell him that I worked damned hard at it, and made it take place.

Motherhood and writing are inextricably linked for me. I dont really keep in mind when I began writing book-length things. I simply always had stories that required numerous pages.

Be cautioned though, writing with kids is challenging. When individuals ask me what its like to stabilize a writing profession, a full-time profession, and raising kids, I describe that its quite like wrestling a greasy owlbear. It is hard. Its a great deal of eking out words and edits at unusual hours, a great deal of not doing things (like watching tv or hanging out). Its, attempt I say it, discipline.

And even more than that? Keeping a writing profession going while raising a family implies you continuously need to learn new methods to write. You need to be flexible. I have a special needs kid. The only constant is modification.

Trunk Novels Arent Always Trunk Novels

They did. And here we are.

I edited it more. I added new scenes. I changed the characters.

Let me preface this with stating, Ive recently been diagnosed with ADHD. And this kind of habits is frequently called RSD, or rejection delicate dysphoria. Normally, I have a thick skin about this stuff. But in the case of this book, I absolutely turtled.

I chose, naturally, that it was never meant to be and no one cared and it was, therefore, a trunk novel (i.e. an unique I would store in my virtual “trunk” with all the other not fit for publication books out there) and total hot garbage, and possibly I should consider stopping writing? Fortunately I didnt go that far. We writers can sure have some rollercoaster emotions.

Damnit, I Love the Editing Process So Much

I believe I might like modifying more than I like writing. Its simply magic.

Erics questions, like good editors should, helped me actually burnish the manuscript to where you see it now. It was an extreme month of editing for me (hey there, hyper-focus), and I held the entire book in my head again, dreaming of it, pressing myself to make more connections and go deeper with language, with the style, with character. All in all, even though the book is under 100,000 words, I tracked well over 10,000 modifications in between Erics edits and my own.

The scenes I added, the edits I made, all actually simply boost the story on another level. As authors, we require to be pressed out of our convenience zones in order to improve. Stasis isnt simply an imagination killer, it can be a career killer.

Heroes Dont Always Carry Swords

That does not indicate, however, that she cant have power. Like the middle ages women of my studies, she still exists. She still discovers power, both from within and through her relationships. If theres anything that defines Anna Pendragon, its her patience, her desire to wait. Perhaps shes a little bit of Aaron Burr in that respect (there really are some parallels, now that I consider it). Time and once again, she puts herself, her body, her mind, and her soul, on the line to eliminate for what she believes is real. That does not always mean she gets it right, or that shes a good mom or sister or spouse at the same time. However a complicated heroine is a lot more enjoyable to compose than one who is the peak of purity and sweetness.

Natania Barron has been traveling to other worlds from a really young age, and will be forever indebted to Lucy Pevensie and Meg Murry for inspiring her to go on her own adventures. She currently lives in North Carolina with her family, and is, at heart, a hobbit– albeit it one with a Tookish streak a mile large.

Ive always liked legendary dream, heroic tales, and swashbuckling experiences: but there arent a lot of ladies for me to look at. The tale of Arthur is not brand-new, but Anna is. As a female, a mom, and somebody whos had to stand up for what she thinks in time and again, it was likewise a powerful experience.

No, there isnt a pandemic in the book. Anna, but dint of her status and relationships, doesnt leave Carelon during the entirety of the narrative save for one instance. While the knights of the Table Round are out slaying monsters, searching grails, bed linen dames, and knocking skulls for the world, shes doing embroidery (albeit begrudgingly).
