S.G. Browne: Five Things I Learned Writing Lost Creatures

At a singles mixer for chemical elements, a luminous-yet-jaded Neon looks for love, or at least a one-night exothermic response. And washed-up evil people live out their worthless lives at a retirement house for bad guys– you never understand when someone may turn the swimming pool into a shark pit, or bring a death ray to Taco Tuesday.

From the imagination of S.G. Browne comes a collection of fourteen brief stories of downtrodden luck poachers, lovelorn chemical components, outdated villains, disillusioned children, trademarked teenagers, castaway reindeer, victimized zombies, and time-traveling alcoholics– a number of them lost and looking for answers. A few of them discover what theyre looking for, while one or two find that youth dreams can come to life.

Theres A Leprechaun Sanctuary In Carlingford, Ireland

The discovery triggered The Carlingford National Leprechaun Hunt on Slieve Foye, with thousands descending on the mountain to search for leprechauns. While numerous of the locals accepted the rise in visitors and the increased profits it brought to Carlingford, they desired to make sure to secure the little people and their habitat, as it was believed that 236 leprechauns lived in the caverns of the mountain.

The genesis for the leprechaun sanctuary drew back in 1989 when P.J. OHare, a regional pub owner, declared he discovered proof of a leprechaun after hearing a scream near the wishing well on Slieve Foye, the mountain that overlooks Carlingford. When the bar owner examined, he found small bones, a tiny green jacket and pants, and a handful of gold coins surrounded by what appeared to be burnt earth. If there were any other witnesses, I have no idea. However the clothing are apparently on display screen at PJs Pub in Carlingford.

Carlingford is a little seaside village in northeast Ireland, about an hour south of Belfast. Among other things, Carlingford is known for its oyster farms, medieval structures, and leprechaun sanctuary. Thats right. A leprechaun sanctuary.

Finally, in 2009, twenty years after the discovery of the leprechauns remains, the European Union gave official heritage status to the leprechauns who resided in the caverns of Slieve Foye, stating the mountain and all of its inhabitants, animals, and plants a designated area of security under the EUs Habitats Directive.

You can find out all sorts of intriguing (and frequently useless) information when you compose a narrative about the pandemic, integrate the web meme “The earth is recovery, nature is returning” into your story, and wind up reading a bunch of articles about mythological creatures and going down the proverbial research rabbit hole.

So who desires to go to Carlingford?

Chlorine & & Fluorine Are Promiscuous Elements

I got a C in my freshman college chemistry class. I aced high school chemistry and was a straight-A student going all the way back to 1st grade. So getting a C during my very first term at college came as somewhat of a shock. It most likely had something to do with the fact that in high school, I wasnt keeping up late 3 nights a week playing drinking video games in my dormitory. It didnt assist that my chemistry class was at 8 in the morning on Friday and Thursday night was a huge celebration night.

There are plenty of chemical components who are simply looking for a one-night exothermic response if youre not interested in making a commitment or forming any kind of long lasting bond. But its most likely best to prevent Technetium and Promethium, given that neither one of them has any stable isotopes. The last thing you desire is a stalker.

I didnt retain a lot of information from my college chemistry class. Go figure. However even had I not been hungover in class on a regular basis, Im quite sure my college chemistry professor never ever pointed out how chlorine and fluorine are two of the more promiscuous components of the table of elements.

Fluorine has actually formed substance bonds with nearly all of the other components. In routine table parlance, shes one electron shy of a full shell. Chlorine, on the other hand, has, at one time or another, hooked up with almost all of the other elements, which is surprising considering hes hazardous, gassy, and irritating.

When it pertains to chemical indiscrimination, Hydrogen isnt far better. It doesnt matter if youre honorable or bad, stable or monoatomic. Hydrogen is synthesizing if youre ionizing. So if youre searching for a severe relationship, hes not precisely spouse product. Carbon, on the other hand, has 2 steady naturally happening isotopes and can forming numerous stable covalent bonds, that makes him more of an ideal prospect for a long-lasting relationship. Although when it comes to monogamy, hes not precisely a paragon of virtue, having formed more substances than any other aspect.

I think its safe to say that the majority of the aspects on the table of elements tend to be polyamorous or at least choose to be in open relationships. I also believe its safe to say that when it concerned composing a narrative about a weekly singles mixer for chemical aspects, I discovered a lot more about chemistry than I performed in high school or college.

I Enjoyed Exploring My Feminine Side

Prior to composing most of the fourteen stories that comprise LOST CREATURES, I composed nine books, one novella, and four-dozen or so narratives. I dont mention this to boast or simple brag, since there are numerous authors who have actually written and published much more stories and novels than Ive ever imagined. I discuss my writing history to highlight that although my books and much of my short stories have actually included popular female characters, none of those characters played the function of the main lead character. The bulk of my writing was male-centered and told from the male POV, which, over the previous 2 decades, has actually been nearly specifically in the 1st person.

Not that I had not read stories or books composed by female authors before, however none had actually influenced or compelled me to shift my point of view when it pertained to my characters and how I desired to tell my stories or who I wished to tell them. Not to mention the type of stories I wished to inform. It brought more balance to my writing and I discovered myself exploring stories and ideas and characters that I never ever would have thought about blogging about before due to the fact that they wouldnt have actually worked as well, or at all, when distinguished a male POV.

While half of the stories in LOST CREATURES have a male protagonist, the other half are told from the POV of a woman– consisting of a ten-year old Japanese lady worried about daikaiju destroying her weekend plans, a college-aged zombie taking remedial English classes, and a mom reminiscing about the family pet centaurs she raised as a kid. The majority of the stories are informed in the 1st individual POV, which enabled me to invest a great deal of time in the female perspective, seeing the story and the world through a various set of eyes than I had so typically told most of my stories. And these stories ended up being some of my favorite stories Ive ever composed.

By the way, if youve never ever checked out anything by Karen Russell or Kelly Link, I highly recommend it.

Then I was presented to the narrative collections of Karen Russell and Kelly Link.

Writing Short Stories Helps Me To Find My Happy Place

When youre not composing to satisfy yourself but in order to meet a contractual commitment, and then there are the times. It occurs regularly than you d think. In some cases business of composing becomes more about business than it does about the writing. And that draws.

Thats the sweet spot that writers want to strike. And when were fortunate, we struck it. But other times it can be laborious, like when you cant find out how to fill a plot hole in your novel or when one of your characters begins doing things that do not make any sense and you scream at your computer, “What the fuck, Timmy?”

When the story isnt working no matter how tough you try to make it work, especially when youre on a deadline and you need to find a way to make it work, thats when the joy of composing becomes a panic-filled grind. Chances are its not going to work for anyone who reads it because if the story isnt working for you. Whichs even worse than anything Timmy was doing to piss you off.

To compose stories.

The thing they dont inform you about being an author is that there are times when it can become a grind, sucking all of the delight out of the creative process. Not that composing is constantly enjoyable. Business side can be a time suck when all you wish to do is take a seat and compose. But often its a difficulty to be innovative, to compose words that youre delighted with, to craft sentences and paragraphs and scenes that make you believe, “This is what I was suggested to do. This is my jam.”

When composing becomes a grind for me, when my novel isnt working or I find myself writing something for the incorrect factors, I write brief stories. Im composing them for the pure happiness of writing. To advise myself that writing can be enjoyable.

Assembling A Short Story Collection Is Like Being A Literary DJ

LOST CREATURES is my literary mixtape. My Friday night DJ gig. Instead of spinning songs, Im spinning stories, attempting to produce the best mood and rhythm in the hopes that the reader sticks around till last call.

S.G. Browne is the author of the books Breathers, Fated, Lucky Bastard, Big Egos, and Less Than Hero, along with the short story collection Shooting Monkeys in a Barrel and the heartfelt vacation novella I Saw Zombies Eating Santa Claus. Hes likewise the author of The Maiden Poodle, a self-published fairy tale about anthropomorphic felines and canines suitable for children and adults of any ages. Hes an ice cream connoisseur, Guinness fanatic, feline shelter volunteer, and a sucker for Its a Wonderful Life. He lives in San Francisco.

To me, brief story collections resemble literary playlists and the writer is the DJ, spinning tales to create a rhythm and flow to keep the energy going and the reader engaged. I cant speak for other authors, however when I compiled LOST CREATURES, I put the stories down in a particular order, moving them around till I found the right circulation, with the idea that checking out the collection from start to end up would offer the reader an experience they would not manage jumping around from one story to another. Not that theres anything incorrect with that, however its simply not the experience I planned for the reader to have.

Over the years, Ive made my reasonable share of mixtapes and am old adequate to have actually made some on real cassette tapes. I still sometimes make mixtapes on CDs (although you could argue that its technically a mix-CD). You still wanted to spin a good mix of tunes that would keep the energy going and the clients pleased.
