Writing Dialogue: A Storytelling Exercise

It cant be stated enough that readers link with a story through its characters, so it makes sense that dialogue frequently makes up some of the most vital parts of a story. In a story, we see the characteristics of relationships played out through discussion. Dialogue

The characters speak over 6 lines of dialogue before they get to the excellent stuff. It seems like a long slog. This is what a real conversation would look like, transcribed to the page. We writers use our storytelling magic to tighten it up into a more riveting discussion:

” Joe, I need to talk to you about the Watershed case.”
Joe nearly lurched out of his chair. He had not heard Sue approaching his desk from behind.

Research study:

Tape a real conversation, and after that transcribe one to 3 pages of it. Approach this exercise fairly– you are not encouraged to tape individuals without their understanding or consent.
